This poem is a sequel to Santa Lives on 12th and Fraser (originally posted on this blog in November 2012).

     Day Job
Santa is trying to
make a turn around.
At the Salvation Army
Thrift Store,
the electric blue
K-Way
calls to him
like the
bright lights
on Broadway.
Opportunity speaks,
and his insides
rumble with
excitement.
"I'll take it."
He says,
reaching deeply
into his pocket.
His hands shaking
with anticipation
as he prays
for Toonies
and Loonies.
In the reflection
of the shop door
he puts it on.
He lifts the hood
onto his head.
The transformation
is solidified.
With his
bright white beard,
and cranberry red
sweatpants,
Santa is
moonlighting
as Papa Smurf.
Again
his existence
is complete.

Sally
